street art Project

Graffiti or street art is something I've really wanted to try for a long time and one day I said to myself I'm going to try it. When my parents were away on holiday I could do it in my garage. But I've never done street art with spray paint, and my parents wanted to make sure the result wouldn't be ugly, that's why I took a little more time and experimented with different color combinations.

Planing/Sketching

First of all, as always, I made a sketch in my sketchbook, without too many details, because with spray paint and no experience, it's pretty hard to put in details. First I had to decide what I was going to make: an animal, an object, a human, or why not all three together. I decided to make a character that, instead of a head, had an fish bowl with a little fish in it.

Then I experimented with shapes for the background, so that it wouldn't look so empty, and with colors that are interesting and go well together.

Render

Then I digitized the more refined sketch and put in the flat colors, then enhanced the colors to make them more in harmony. Then I experimented with several color combinations to see what I liked best and what my parents liked best.

Spray painting

After we had settled on the colors I could finally start spray painting. I used a projector to do the sketch and to help me with the proportions because I know myself, otherwise it would have gone wrong. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the sketch but you can still look at it on the video.

Once again during the creation of this piece I questioned myself a lot, especially in the first phase of coloring, because I've never done spray paint and it was very difficult to make clean lines and so on. But in the end it was such fun to do and I'm happy with the result.

Video

This time I thought it would be cool to make a video of the whole process but I only had a camera to take pictures and I could not make videos longer than 20 min so every time the camera stopped I forgot to turn it back on. In the end, when I had all the footage I thought why not edit the video to make something more captivating than just showing the process of my piece. I began listening to lots of music to find something that went with the theme. When I found it, I imported everything into premiere pro and started cutting clips I didn't need, speeding things up, slowing things down. It was really hard to get the hang of the software for the first time so it took a lot longer than it should have but it was nice to learn something new.
